Desmond Llewelyn, who played the much loved Q in 17 James Bond films between 1963 and 1999, died on 19th December 1999 at the age of 85.
He died at Eastbourne District General Hospital after a car accident while driving home from a book signing. It was just a few weeks after the premiere of his final film, The World Is Not Enough.
John Cleese, who played R in The World Is Not Enough and then Q in Die Another Day, was born in Somerset on 27th October 1939.
Ben Whishaw, who was introduced as gadget master Q in Daniel Craig’s third outing as 007, was born on 14th October 1980.
Prior to Skyfall, Whishaw appeared in Layer Cake, also staring Daniel Craig and played Sebastian Flyte in a film adaptation of Brideshead Revisited, as well as a variety of other roles in film, TV and theatre, including the voice of Paddington Bear.

Llewelyn first played Q in the second Bond movie, From Russia With Love (1963), and reprised the role in every film until The World In Not Enough (1999), with the exception of Live And Let Die (1973).
