Joseph Wiseman, who appeared as the very first Bond villain in Dr No (1962), died on 19th October 2009.
Although Wiseman preferred to be remembered for his stage career, he is best known for playing Dr Julius No after coming to the attention of Harry Saltzman in the film Detective Story (1951).
The first James Bond film went on UK general release on 8th October 1962, three days after it premiered at the London Pavilion. Directed by Terence Young, Dr No starred Sean Connery as 007 and introduced some of the elements that we still associate with James Bond today.
On 5th October 1962 the Dr No premiered at the London Pavilion, the first of what is one of the most successful film series ever and now celebrated as Global James Bond Day.
Sean Connery, who played James Bond in six films by Eon Productions as well as Kevin McClory’s Thunderball remake, Never Say Never Again, was born in Edinburgh on 25th August 1930.
For many fans Connery has never been bettered in the role of 007, bringing to the role the right balance between toughness and wit.
